FA Charges Bentancur for Racial Remark
Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has been charged by the Football Association (FA) for making a racial slur about his teammate Son Heung-min. The incident occurred during a June appearance on Uruguayan television when Bentancur made an inappropriate joke about Son. Although Bentancur later apologized for his remarks on Instagram, calling them a "very bad joke," the FA has deemed his comments a breach of conduct, citing them as racially and ethnically insensitive.
The FA's charge against Bentancur highlights its commitment to addressing discrimination, noting that his actions constituted an "aggravated breach" due to the racial implications. Bentancur has been given until September 19 to respond to the charge. According to FA regulations, breaches involving discrimination could lead to match bans ranging from 6 to 12 games.
Despite the controversy, Son Heung-min has stated that Bentancur apologized to him personally and emphasized that their relationship remains strong. The incident has drawn attention to broader issues of racial discrimination, particularly affecting East Asian communities, as underscored by the anti-discrimination charity Kick It Out.
