Marseille President Defends Greenwood Signing Amid Criticism
Marseille's president, Pablo Longoria, has expressed no regrets over signing Mason Greenwood from Manchester United, despite facing criticism. Greenwood, who joined Marseille in a £26.6m deal, had serious charges against him, including attempted rape and assault, dropped in 2023. Longoria stated that the club thoroughly reviewed all information before deciding to bring Greenwood in, emphasizing their belief in his talent and character.
The decision to sign Greenwood sparked opposition, notably from the local mayor, who deemed the move unacceptable. However, Longoria defended the choice by highlighting the internal discussions and the quick consensus reached with Marseille's coach, Roberto de Zerbi, who was familiar with Greenwood's capabilities. Greenwood has since proven his worth on the pitch, scoring five goals in three matches and contributing to Marseille's undefeated start under De Zerbi.
While Greenwood's performances have been impressive in France, he remains absent from England's national team considerations. England's caretaker manager, Lee Carsley, confirmed that Greenwood was not under consideration for selection. Longoria chose not to comment on Greenwood's international prospects, preferring to focus on his contributions at Marseille, where the club is pleased with his positive impact.
